Last time: The Books that Healed Me: Part 1 (for paying subscribers)
“I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.” —L.M. Montgomery, Anne of Green Gables
With the recent publication of Time’s “The 100 Best Mystery and Thrillers of All Time,” I have found myself not only adding books to my TBR but also thinking about what makes the perfect October read.
Horror is always welcome, of course, especially if you’re craving something seasonally appropriate. If you ask me, I say bring on the haunted houses, creepy dolls, and masked slashers. Though, I am partial to witches lately, too. But for those readers who don’t want traditional horror, mysteries and thrillers are kind of perfect for spooky season.
Beyond my own favorites (below) from Time’s impressively diverse list, I’ve addd a few other less-scary but equally mysterious books to recommend this fall. Two lists in one. I hope you will add a few of your own faves for this time of year in the comments below.
Note: I am a Bookshop.org affiliate and one of these days I may earn a small commission if someone buys a book through my links.

Five More Non-Horror Books for Fall Reading
This is a short list (and a short post) because in addition to rewatching Practical Magic and searching for more creepy books to read, I am buried under a different kind of reading: personal narratives in English 101. Pretend I said that in a scary voice.
(I mean, it’s also soup season and sweater weather. I’ve got a crockpot waiting for me.)
